Not Ready for the Squeeze

Why is my health insurer bugging me to get a mammogram?

Dear Not Ready for the Squeeze,
Your health insurer has a self-interest in your getting a mammogram. They get a score and a ranking from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA): the higher the percentage of women who get mammograms, the higher your insurer’s score for that item. There are many items that are scored and go into the insurer’s ranking. Having a high score and ranking above peers gives the insurer an edge to compete for business.

When to get a mammogram is entirely up to you.
